So you’ve been dreaming of taking your nursing skills on the road, getting paid to travel, and meeting new people. However, you keep putting it off, and just can’t seem to muster yourself to do it. This is common, and good news is, you’re not alone! Beginning your career as a travel nurse will be an adjustment, but the rewards and experiences are certainly worth it!
What are common fears of beginning travel nursing?
It’s difficult to leave a job where you know your co-workers and the hospital well, and have a steady schedule. You’re also leaving behind your city, family, and friends. Travel nursing contracts are typically 13 weeks long, and it’s a long time to be away from the comforts of home if you’ve never done it before.
Many nurses also worry about social concerns, such as fitting in, or the employees at their assignment being accepting of travel nurses. Some people report hearing “horror stories” about a nurse being hazed at a travel assignment.
You might also be asking yourself if you really have enough experience as a nurse, or in your particular nursing specialty to do well as a travel nurse. Many nurses begin traveling early on in their career, so this is a common concern.
I still really want to be a travel nurse- what can I do to help these fears?
While 13 weeks (the length of the average travel contract) can seem like a long time away from friends and family, remember that you can take time between contracts to spend some time at home with your loved ones. During your contracts, you’ll still have plenty of free time on your off days to go out and do some exploring around your new location. Whether you’re hiking in Alaska, climbing mountains in Colorado, or lounging on a California beach, time flies when you’re having fun!
Many facilities that hire travel nurses also hire several nurses at the same time. Chances are, you won’t be the only traveler at many of your assignments! If you’re worried about fitting in, or making friends, remember that you’ll likely be in orientation with some fellow travelers. Fellow travel nurses can also make great adventure partners on days off!
It’s natural to feel somewhat worried about a shorter orientation, one that’s different than what you’re accustomed to. While it’s possible to not be experienced enough as a nurse, or in a particular specialty to feel comfortable as a travel nurse, many nurses begin traveling with as little as one year of work experience. Most of these nurses adapt well to the quicker orientation pace, and excel as travel nurses.
